Cyclohexanone is an organic ketone with a cyclic structure. This colorless liquid has an odor similar to acetone. It is naturally found in crude oil but is also produced synthetically.
Industrial Production Methods
One of the main industrial methods for producing cyclohexanone is the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane, which results in a mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, commonly known as KA oil. This mixture is used in the production of adipic acid, hexamethylene diamine, and nylon 66. Another common method is the hydrogenation of phenol.
Applications
Over 95% of cyclohexanone production in the U.S. is used for nylon manufacturing.
The remaining amount is used as a chemical intermediate or solvent.
As a solvent, it can dissolve cellulose acetate, raw rubber, and wax.
It is widely used in solvents, cleaning agents, paints, resins, adhesives, stain removers, and degreasers.
It is also added to lubricating oils and used as a monomer in the production of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and methacrylic esters.
Cyclohexanone is used in agrochemicals and pesticides, the automotive industry, paints, dye synthesis, and electronics.
In pharmaceuticals, its derivatives are used to produce antihistamines.
